Tundra

Tundra Habitat

The tundra habitat is characterized by extremely cold temperatures, low precipitation, and short growing seasons. The soil in tundra habitats is usually frozen throughout the year, which makes it difficult for plants to grow. Due to the harsh climate and shortage of plants, very few animals populate the tundra habitat. Animals that inhabit the tundra have adapted to its extreme conditions, and include snowy owls, arctic foxes, and polar bears.

Tundra Animals

Arctic Fox

Arctic Fox

Classification: Mammal
Diet: Carnivore
Mass: Up to 9.4 kg

Conservation Status: Least Concern

Interesting Fact: The arctic fox's fur changes color with the seasons. In the winter, the fur is white to blend in with the snowy landscape, while in the summer, the fur turns dark gray or brown. This adaptation helps the arctic fox remain camouflaged to avoid predators as well as to catch prey.
